This was the day we were to visit the North Cape. This is the northern most point of Europe. There is a monument and a museum there — or so we were told.
The day started out very grey. The winds picked up, but we were still in the inland waterways. In the morning we were told that the trip to the cape was cancelled. The last part of the road is very exposed to the Arctic Ocean. The winds were simply too strong for the buses. So we were going to visit some areas around the port.
Too bad. The “I visited the Cape” shirt I bought on the boat turned out to not be true. (After washing it did not fit anyway).
This was our last day on the boat. From Honnigsvåg the route is in the open ocean. Those among us who were inclined to sea sickness were rather green by the next morning.
We arrived in Kirkenes the next morning. Sadly there was not time to tour the area. Instead we were taken immediately to the airport. In the next several hours we learned that the storm we experienced the previous day ravaged air transport in Norway. Our flight to Oslo was late. When we arrived our bags were not to be found. But there were many piles of bags from much delayed passengers. Fortunately our bags were eventually delivered and we made our flight to London.
