Nazca Lines and Paracas

June 21-23, 2019

This section describes our trip to Paracas and flight to the Nazca Lines. Paracas is about 3 hours south of Lima along the Pan American Highway.

Pachacamac

It was a four hour bus ride to Paracas from Lima. Paracas is where we caught the plane to view the lines. To break up the trip we stoped at the Pachacamac site just south of Lima. This was a religious site since about 200 AD that was coopted by the Incas once they ruled Peru.

Dune Ride

Another hour in the bus, lunch, some more bus. The guides hinted at a surprise. The surprise was a ride in dune buggies. It was a wild ride. The drivers gave us a good thrill, but operated within safe limits.

Nazca Lines

The next morning was our flight to the lines. The weather locally was GRIM. We were told that the problem was weather to the south at the lines. Having been on a lot of these tourist flights before I was expecting a fly by night kind of company (no pun). Eventually the weather cleared to minimums and we headed to the airport. The airport seemed like a "Field of Dreams" experience. Our flight to Nazca seemed to be the only thing happening at the airport.

I have to acknowledge the help of Aquiziam in helping me find the correct lat long and to identify at least one of the lines I photographed,

Gentle Reader For those thinking about the flight be aware that to allow all passengers the opportunity to see the lines the pilot has to perform aggressive steep turns. This is not the morning for fried eggs, potatoes, and sausage.

Fortunately I was wrong about the airplanes. These were fully equipped IFR capable aircraft with a fully airline qualified crew.

The group before folks started turning green.

Return to Lima

The next day we set out for Lima. First we visited the Islas Ballestas bird sanctuary.

We stopped at Iglesia San Jose for lunch and a tour.
