It was now time to walk to the ANI camp

  • Pole station from side
  • walking past ceremonial pole on way to camp
  • walk to ANI camp (looking back toward pole)
  • ANI camp after plane moved. The camp was about 1K from pole
  • ANI camp

Inside the mess tent of the ANI camp.  This is where we spend almost all of our waking hours.  Outside it was -22C (-38 with wind chill) which was considered to be a good day.  Certainly that was my impression of the weather. With the ANI gear we were well prepared.

  • inside pole mess tent

The area around the south pole is highly regulated.  We were given detailed instructions where we could and could not go.  The map behind Paul shows this. Basically we could walk between our tents and the mess, bathrooms.  We could also follow the marked path to the pole site.  Everything else was off limits.

    • tightly restricted access

Finally my sleeping accommodations.  Unlike at Union Glacier we had single person tents. These were the same double tents used in other ANI expeditions (see the picture while skiing the previous day).  They were definitely warm ( it was 10C inside when the sun was out).  They had an entrance that was rather tight, but protected the inner tent from the wind.
